Oghenekaro Etebo’s former Stoke City teammate Saido Berahino boasts Burundi is ready for Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group B opener.

The 25-year-old striker banned from driving for 30 months and fined £75,000 for being three times over the legal alcohol limit when he was stopped by police in London in February and they Potters have taken action by cancelling the contract of ex-West Brom goal-poacher which is due to run until the summer of 2022.

Berahino captained his side and featured for 75 minutes as Burundi held Algeria to a 1-1 draw in a pre-AFCON friendly game in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday.

The Swallows’ first-ever AFCON finals match is against three-time champions, the Super Eagles on Saturday, June 22 before facing Madagascar and Guinea to rounding off their Group B in Egypt.

Berahino says Burundi are ready to hoist their country’s flag high in Egypt.

“I want to reassure the Burundian people that we are ready to defend the national colours in Egypt.

“Our strength is based on team solidarity. It helped us through the qualifiers and we hope it will help us in the tournament proper.”

Berahino who represented England at youth levels before switching international allegiance to Burundi in 2018 joined the Potters from West Bromwich Albion for a fee of £12 million and made 51 league appearances for the side, scoring three goals.
