Onnoghen: Ismamic Group Rubbishes NBA’s Stand

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has reacted to the alleged meeting between Vice President, Pastor Yemi Osinbajo and members of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, over the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen.

A 12-man team of the NBA had reportedly met with Osinbajo following the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The meeting allegedly took place early on Monday, 28th January, 2019 and the subject-matter was how to get a soft landing for the suspended CJN.

Among the options reportedly suggested by the team of NBA were the following:

1 CJN to resign or retire without coercion; 2. Govt to withdraw all charges against Onnoghen. 3. No molestation of CJN under any guise; 4. Acting CJN should quit. 5. NBA team to prevail on relatives, friends to persuade Justice Onnoghen to resign. 6. Consensus on the need to clean up the Judiciary (long term measure).

However, MURIC, in a statement on Friday, said the only acceptable option was the 6th.

The group also agreed with option 1 with an amendment. It rejected options 2 and 4, while describing option 3 as superfluous, suggestive and ill-motivated.

The group regards option 5 as ridiculous, laughable and unsavoury in a statement issued to the media on Friday evening and signed by the founder and director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

There should be no scared cow in Nigeria. Civil Servants go through the same treatment without NBA intervention why Onnoghen? Ag. CJN has done nothing to be excluded from promotion to CJN if the incumbent resign because it is the norms in the Civil Service and NBA has no says in running the Civil Service. Alien provision should not be injected into the Civil Service Rules and Regulations. Federal Civil Service had never interfered with NBA Administration and it should not and it should keep awayfrom the Civil Service Administration. NBA should go to Court to present its case on Onnoghen if it has any against Government but it should not looby for his exit with conditions to Government. This is ridiculous.
