Martial aims sly dig at Mourinho after signing new Utd deal

Anthony Martial take a sly dig at Jose Mourinho after signing a new five-and-a-half-year contract extension at Manchester United worth £200,000 a week.

The 23-year-old France international had 18 months to run on his existing deal at Old Trafford and Red Devils feared of losing the winger had the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach remained in charge at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, Martial has been buoyed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment as interim boss and Manchester United made a breakthrough in negotiations with the player’s representatives earlier this month.

Martial’s new deal, which runs until 2024, puts him alongside Red Devils’ top earners and the ex-Monaco forward admits he’s delighted to put an end to the speculation.

Speaking after putting pen to paper he told the club official website said: ‘I am loving my time at this club.

“From the day I joined I have been made to feel part of the United family and I have been incredibly humbled and overwhelmed by the warmth and love of our fans, who continue to amaze me with their support.

“I would like to thank Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) and his coaching staff for their belief in me and for helping me to take my game to the next level. This club is all about winning trophies and I am sure the next piece of silverware is not that far away.’

Former Cardiff boss Solskjaer paid tribute to Martial, who has helped him win eight and draw one of his first nine games in charge since replacing Jose Mourinho in December.

“Anthony is one of those naturally gifted players that any coach would love to work with.

“For a young man, he has a good footballing brain which, when coupled with his exceptional talent, makes for a player with an exciting future ahead of him.

“This is the perfect club for Anthony to progress his development as a top-class forward and we are all delighted he has signed a long-term deal.’

Martial has scored 10 goals in 25 appearances this term and has been a regular starter under Solskjaer and he could be back in action for on Sunday, as Manchester United take on Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in the Premier League encounter.
