Russia 2018: Spain pick new coach to replace Lopetegui

Lopetegui was dismissed on Wednesday, just one day after Real Madrid confirmed that he has been chosen to succeed Zinedine Zidane at Santiago Bernabeu.

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales claimed he had been “forced” into dismissing Lopetegui on the eve of the tournament, and Hierro, who spent 14 years as a player at Real Madrid and also enjoyed a spell at Bolton Wanderers, has stepped into the breach.

Hierro won 89 caps for Spain as a player and served as Real Madrid assistant manager under Carlo Ancelotti, before having one season in charge of Oviedo.

Spain, considered one of the favourites to win this summer’s World Cup prior to Lopetegui’s shock dismissal, begin their campaign against Portugal on Friday in Sochi.
