South African Returns $15 Million Cash For Arms Seized From Former Pres. Jonathan’s Goons

The South African Government has returned the cash for arms seized from the Nigerian government during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, PRNigeria, an agency that disseminates information for the government has said.

Although, details of the cash return is still sketchy, the source said that legal and diplomatic processes initiated by the former National Security Adviser ensured that cash seized by the South African government have been fully recovered by Nigeria.”

It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was forced to resort to the alternative market to obtain arms when western powers blocked every access to the formal arms market but the cash were seized both at the airport and in the bank.

The Government had, on September 5, 2014, seized $9.3m cash belonging to Nigeria and a month laterseized another $5.7m, claiming that both funds were to be used for illegal purchase of arms.

However, the Nigerian government through its then National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, said thetransactions were legal.

The South African Govt however held on to the cash, but upon the election of President Muhammdau Buhari in March, it agreed to return the money in an effort to start off on a clean slate with the Nigeria president.
