Police Service Commission Promotes 632 Senior Officers

The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 632 senior Police Officers in line with its constitutional mandate to promote persons to offices in the Nigeria Police Force.

A statement from the commission which was issued in Abuja yesterday showed that 460 officers were promoted from the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, (ASP) to the next rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, (DSP) while 172 officers on the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police were elevated to the rank of Superintendent of Police.

Head, Press and Public Relations of the Commission, Ikechukwu Ani, who signed the statement said the Commission took the decision at its 11th Plenary Meeting held in Abuja and presided over by its Chairman, Sir Mike Okiro, retired Inspector General of Police.

According to the statement, the officers were found to have satisfied the Commission’s criteria for promotion which include maturity on a rank, absence of pending disciplinary matter, merit and establishment budget vacancy availability. The promotion of the officers takes effect from March 12th, 2015.

Meanwhile, the Inspector- General of Police, Ag IGP Solomon E. Arase, in enforcing the Police Anti-Corruption Initiative, has directed the IGP Teams on Monitoring of Police Performance to immediately commence the monitoring of activities and conducts of Police officers on the Highways, Police Stations and Formations nationwide.

The IGP expressed his resolve to rid the Force of all forms of corruption and warns officers and men to desist from corrupt practices.

He further urged officers and men of the Force to be mindful of the constitutional rights of the citizenry, while performing their statutory duties, warning against excessive use of force and unjustifiable application of lethal weapons contrary to standing rules of engagement, as the Force would not hesitate to punish indicted officers.

In addition, the IGP, on behalf of the Police High Command, commended the general public for their understanding, cooperation and support for the Force in the face of the current security challenges.
