Death Toll Rises To 63 In TB Joshua’s Church Building Collapse

It was jubilation galore early Tuesday morning at the scene of the collapsed guesthouse belonging to TB Joshua’s Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) when a 45-year-old woman walked out alive after spending almost five days under the rubble of the six-storey building.

Spokesman of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) South-West, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, revealed this in a statement made available to journalists yesterday, saying the woman walked out alive on her own at exactly 2a.m.

The NEMA boss added that additional eight dead bodies were recovered from the rubble in overnight rescue operation, bringing the total death toll in the incident to 63.

According to Farinloye, the total number of those rescued alive stood at 131 after the 45-year-old woman was added to the list.

As at the time of filing this report, he said the possibility of recovering more dead bodies from the rubbles was high.

Amid the confusion created by the collapse, the police on Monday deployed five sniffer dogs to fish out people still trapped in the rubble of the collapsed guesthouse.

“We are deploying police sniffer dogs to assist in locating trapped victims as we are getting close to area suspected to have more people trapped.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered release of five dogs after a collective decision to use the dogs by responding agencies and NEMA asked the police disaster management unit to facilitate the release of the dogs immediately,” he said.
