By Kikiowo Ileowo

Okada riders in Mushin Local Government under the aegis MUshin Motocycles Operators today embarked on a street protest, demanding an end to the assaults melted out to them by men of the Nigerian Police Force.

It could be recalled that the Lagos State Government, headed by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola banned Commercial Motorcycles popularly called ‘Okada’ from operating on major roads in Lagos metropolis. To enforce this order, the governor mobilised a crack team of Mobile Policemen and other officers of law enforcement agencies operating in the state to reign in disobedient operators, but these men usually take laws into their hands, using cruel and unconventional methods to enforce the ban.

The protesters headed by one Sikiru, stated that they were protesting the “maltreatment of their members by the Nigeria Police Force”.

“One of our members was stripped naked, and his Okada confiscated.”

“Some of our memebers are beaten and and maltreated”.

“Of most inportance to us is the extortion that goes on, our members are extorted daily; our meagre income is used to ‘settle’ police” he told The Paradigm correspondent who witnessed the protest and sent in this report today.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Mushin is just regaining peace, please, don’t turn Mushin back into a violent local government” ; “Please we don’t want violence in Mushin but peace” ; “please don’t turn us into what we don’t want to become” and several others.

The protesters sang war songs and marched to the Mushin Local Government office to lay their complaints with the council Chairman for onward transmission to the State Governor.
