SAD! 60 Year Old Jumps Inside Well Over N350,000 debt

Tragedy struck in Ilesa, Osun State, during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration on Tuesday when a yet-to-be identified 60-year-old man jumped inside a well and died at his residence.

The deceased was said to have committed suicide over a N350, 000 debt he owed.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the deceased had, prior to the incident, made a suicide attempt on Monday but was prevented from achieving his aim by his relatives.

The deceased reportedly pretended to heed the advice of his relatives, only to jump into the well the following day, immediately the opportunity presented itself.

As news of the suicide spread, there was confusion in the area as residents rushed to the scene to catch a glimpse of the victim.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, confirmed the incident to Saturday PUNCH.

She said, “Our investigation revealed that the deceased allegedly owed someone in Abuja the sum of N350, 000 and was unable to pay. He decided to commit suicide despite all the persuasion from his family members.

“A team of detectives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, ‘A’ Division, Ilesa, quickly moved to the scene and the corpse of the victim has been removed. The family suspects no foul play in the death but we are still carrying on further investigation,” Odoro said

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old welding apprentice was electrocuted at Ile-Ife, Osun State, last Saturday at his master’s workshop. The victim was said to be working with a wielding machine at his master’s workshop when the incident occurred.
