A statement from the State House yesterday says President Goodluck Jonathan has received with great shock and sadness, news of the tragic airplane crash in Lagos.

The President extends condolences to all families who lost members in the plane crash, and the government and people of Ondo State who have been plunged into sorrow yet again while preparing to lay their former governor to rest.

The press statement further states that the President feels and shares the grief and pain of the Agagu family as they grapple with the further loss of beloved relatives and associates so soon after losing their husband, father and mentor.

He prayed that God Almighty will comfort the  Agagu family, as well as their relatives and friends, and grant them the divine grace they will undoubtedly require to overcome the trauma of this most trying time.

President Jonathan said he views the plane crash as most unfortunate and regrettable, given the concerted efforts of the Federal Government to enhance aviation safety in the country.

He has therefore ordered a thorough investigation of the crash by all relevant agencies with a view to determining the cause and taking further actions, as may become necessary.

In a similar vein, the New PDP has condoled with the family of the victims of the Associated Airline plane that crashed yesterday.

The Abubakar Baraje led-PDP said it learnt with shock, news of the plane crash that took place in Lagos, in which several lives were lost. The breakaway PDP expressed shock over the incidence in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze.

“We are shattered by the news of this unspeakable tragedy, especially as the flight also had some prominent personalities on board”, the statement said.

“Our hearts go out to the Agagu family, to the families of victims of the crash, as well as to the people and Government of Ondo State, and especially to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and, indeed, all Nigerians. We also sympathize with the management of Associated Airlines on this great tragedy”, the statement empathize.

The ‘rebel’ PDP also urged Nigerians to remember the victims and their families in their prayers and to intensify prayers for the nation in these difficult times.

This morning (yesterday), the Associated Airlines chartered flight heading for Akure, the Ondo State capital, took off at roughly 9:30 am (0830 GMT) from the domestic terminal at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, but the engine failed on takeoff and it crash-landed and burst into flames. The plane was said to be carrying the body of Dr. Olusegun Agagu, a former governor of Ondo State and an erstwhile chieftain of our great party, who died on September 13 and is scheduled to be buried this weekend.
