Lagos Commences Year 2013 Pensioners Biometric Exercise

The Lagos State Government, through the Civil Service Pension Office, has kicked off the Year 2013 pensioners biometric verification exercise at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat.

The Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Mrs. Florence Modupe Oguntuase, in her speech at the occasion, enjoined all pensioners to cooperate with the ministry officials in charge of the registration at the 16 designated centres across the State.

She explained that the biometric verification exercise is very important in collating data that will assist the government in ensuring the success of its “PAY AS YOU GO” scheme for all pensioners in the State.

While noting that special arrangement would be made to conduct home verification exercise for those who are physically challenged, sick and the elderly who have indicated their interest through letters to the Ministry, the Commissioner urged all those present at the event to also avail themselves of the medical screening exercise that had been arranged for their benefit so as to know their individual status and get the necessary medical advice.

On the recent protest by some pensioners, Mrs. Oguntuase said the issues raised are being addressed by the State government, stressing that the Fashola led administration has been faithful in its obligation to the pensioners in the old and new scheme, especially with the recent payment of N18.9 billion retirement benefits to pensioners.

She concluded by commending the commitment of those who have contributed immensely to the success of the exercise by specifically recognizing the efforts of the Civil Service Pension Office and Messrs NIRPH, the technical support consultant, for making the exercise possible.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary Civil Service Pension Office, Mrs. Adesoye Folasade, said the biometric verification exercise ceremony marks the fifth in the series of the Government desire of making sure that the “PAY AS YOU GO” scheme in the State is not only sustained but to be emulated by all in the country.

According to her, “As a responsible Government it is within our mandate to ensure that terminal benefits of pensioners are paid as and when due because your comfort is our joy and we will not be satisfied until the peace you deserved in your old age is not compromised”.

While advising them to abide strictly by the laws guiding the process of the exercise at the various designated centres, Mrs. Adesoye implored the pensioners to pay adequate attention to their health in order to live a healthy and sickness free life in retirement.
