Nigerian Writer Attacked for Exposing Native Doctors

By Bliss Reel Media

To what extent can some people go to prove a point? People of shady character in society will always be jittery when their activities are exposed to the public. This goes to show why a Nigerian writer and Activist, Tayo Demola was recently attacked by people suspected to be native doctors (spiritualits) for daring to write an article on their connivance with armed robbers and kidnappers to commit crime.

Demola, whose article, “Perspectives to solving crime in Nigeria” was recently published online and in some Nigerian newspapers , said he has been receiving strange calls and life threats from unknown persons who felt he should be taught a lesson for having the audacity to write on such sensitive topic in the media.

Having made some recommendations to the police in his write-up, on how spiritualits aid criminals by providing them spiritual protection against arrest and how the police could tackle the issue, his attackers felt he unnecessarily exposed their deals with the bandits, whom they claim constitute a veritable source of livelihood for them.

A one time TV Panelist whose articles are regularly published in many Nigerian newspapers, Demola is known for his hardline stance on issues of national importance. A few days after the publication of his article online and in some national newspapers, the police seem to have gone after some spiritualits, with some arrests made.

It is however not immediately clear if police authorities heeded his suggestions in the write-up or whether it was a co-incidence of some sort.

In an interview with the media in Lagos, the writer said he can never be intimidated by such threats and would continue to bare his mind and contribute to national issues even if some people may not be comfortable with his views.  According to him, “no amount of attack or intimidation can stop me from offering my views on issues of national importance. Nigeria belongs to all of us and we must not allow certain criminal gangs to hijack the nation and continue to torment us for no just cause.”
