Real Reason CJN Refused to Swear in Appeal Court Justice- Thisday

The refusal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukthar, to swear in Justice Ifeoma Jumbo-Ofo, who was recently elevated to the Court of Appeal may be based on an extant government gazette, THISDAY has learnt.

Jumbo-Ofo, one of the 12 newly justices of the Court of Appeal was not allowed to take the judicial oath by Mukthar at the swearing in ceremony on Monday following a petition that she was not originally from Abia, the state which nominated her.

Jumbo-Ofo, who is originally from Anambra State, had, in the past 14 years, been serving in the Abia State Judiciary – the home state of her husband – before she was elevated to an Appeal Court judge.

THISDAY investigation revealed that Mukthar’s refusal to administer the judicial oath on Jumbo-Ofo was based on Official Gazette No 74, Vol 84 headed ‘Guiding Principles and Formulae for the Distribution of all Cadres of Posts’, created in pursuance of the Federal Character Commission (Establishment, etc) Decree (1996 No 34).
