Fashola vows to fish out journalist’s attackers

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Friday said he would investigate the circumstances that led to the assault of LEADERSHIP Newspapers photo journalist, Mr. Benedict Uwalaka.

He added that those responsible for the act would be made to face the consequence of their actions.

Uwalaka was battered on Thursday by mortuary attendants at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he was covering the release of corpses of victims of the Dana plane crash.

The governor said, “I am horrified by the brazen act of barbarism displayed by the culprits. I render unreserved apology to the victim and his media organisation and I am assuring them that those involved would be brought to book.

“I did not hear of the incidents until after the prayer when I got home. I was trying to catch a piece of the news and I was really horrified at what I saw. First of all, whatever that journalist may have done, there is nothing to provoke that kind of action. That is not us. I have since yesterday asked that those involved be found.”

The governor raised the alarm over the hacking of his phone number. He explained that some con men opened an account in Skye Bank and later used his phone number to send SMS to his cabinet members and permanent secretaries to pay some specified amount of money into the account.

He said, “I must use this opportunity to appeal to all citizens and all of those who have received text messages purportedly being sent in my name. Please ignore those messages, they are not from us.”
